21.10.2005 Jews and Catholics in Australia have jointly marked the 40 th anniversary of the Vatican's 1965 declaration 'Nostra Aetate, generally regarded as a great shift in Jewish-Catholic relations. The document, proclaimed by Pope Paul VI at the end of the Second Vatican Council, acknowledged Judaism as a legitimate religion. At a commemorative event in Sydney's Great Synagogue, Rabbi Raymond Apple said that with "Nostra Aetate", the Catholic Church "consigned to history the doctrine that Christians had superseded Jews as the people of God." Cardinal Edward Cassidy pointed out: "We went from 2,000 years of hostility, of considering the Jewish people as responsible in all times for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, to therefore being condemned as a race, to an understanding that the people certainly of today and in other centuries after that terrible event were not responsible in any way." But he also said that because of the differences between the two religions, differences of opinion were inevitable.
