Global Jewish TV Channel May Appear in the Nearest Future
14.01.2009
The Jewish Parliament deputies discussed and supported the idea of the creation of a Jewish satellite television channel. The channel is planned to broadcast 24 hours a day in English, initially, only in the countries with the largest Jewish population. The channel will be headquartered in one of the European countries, probably in Berlin.
Besides numerous news blocks, the future channel will produce theme programs on religious and cultural issues, political, economic and social problems.
The idea of creating such a channel is being actively promoted by a Russian official, member of the RF Council, former President of the Russian Jewish Congress Vladimir Slutsker. He said that "the concept of the channel’s creation had been accepted in December 2008 by the powerful international EFI organization (European Friends of Israel), which includes prominent politicians and parliamentarians from European countries."
This is not the first time that the idea of creation of a satellite Jewish channel has been voiced. In the past, the suggestion to create a Russian-speaking Jewish channel came from Oleg Rostovtsev (Ukraine), Alexander Lakshin (Russia) and others. Such an idea had been considered by Levi Levaev, one of the major Jewish philanthropists and a German media magnate Nikolaj Verner. But the implementation of these ideas did not follow.
Some media believe that activization of talks about the Jewish channel is connected with the intention of some Russian-speaking Jewish functionaries to occupy the leading positions in the World Jewish Congress, which will be electing its management in late January in Israel.
