Hamas leaders make first public appearance since Gaza war

Hamas's two top leaders in the Gaza Strip made their first public appearances on Friday, having gone to ground during the January war with Israel, witnesses said.
They said that Ismail Haniyeh and Mahmoud al-Zahar delivered separate mosque sermons. Neither had been seen publicly since December 27, when Israel launched a 22-day offensive to counter Palestinian rocket fire from Gaza.
The leaders went underground apparently fearing they would be assassinated by Israel during the war.
Hamas Interior Minister Said Sayyam, No. 3 in the movement and the effective founder of the its police force, was killed in an Israel Air Force strike in mid-January.
