Attempt to Preserve Old Belarusian Synagogue

Head of the Union of Belarusian Jewish Public Associations and Communities Leonid Levin has sent a telegram to the chairman of Liuban's executive committee of town with a request to suspend demolition of the synagogue of the beginning of the 20th century. It is also said in the telegram that "Jewish community has not been informed on the beginning of demolition of Liuban's synagogue," that in
case of the demolition of this historic building, "a serious international scandal" may arise.
"The telegram was sent after the fact about a demolition threat to one of the last wooden synagogues of Belarus came to knowledge," Veronika Rusakova, a press secretary of the Union, explained to the Jewish News Agency. At present time, Leonid Levin plans to set off for a scene to meet town authorities and solve the problem of preservation of the historic building positively.
The problem of preservation of the wooden synagogue in Liuban was raised by Head of the Voluntary Association on the Historical and Cultural Monuments Protection Anton Astapovich in April of 2009.
