"Isaiah Berlin and Riga of his time" Opens in Riga

In Latvian National Library, a bilingual exhibition (in the Lithuanian and English languages) has opened. It is called "Isaiah Berlin and Riga of his time," and tells about the life and work of a distinguished philosopher born in Riga, as well as about historical and cultural features of the capital in the early 20th century and the life of Jewish community. Isaiah Berlin (1909-1997) is one of the most famous expatriates of Riga, a great theorist of Political Science, advocate of the theory of liberalism and freedom of the individual, the holder of high awards and academic degrees.
Nevertheless, in Latvia, his name is well known only to a narrow circle of intellectuals. The exhibition is designed to fill this gap, and targeted at the widest audience possible.
The exhibition tells about the philosopher's childhood, which he spent at Albert Street of Riga, the emigration to Russia and then to England, the tragic fate of the Berlin family, the formation of his philosophy and his relations with other great figures of the 20th century - S. Eisenstein, Boris Pasternak, Anna Akhmatova, Z. Freud, L. Wittgenstein, B. Wolf, P. Picasso, Jean Cocteau, G. Garbo, D. Shostakovich, etc.
The exhibition is organized in cooperation with "Soros Foundation - Latvia," the European Commission in Latvia and the Museum "The Jews in Latvia."
