Vandalism at Belarus Jewish Cemetery

In Borisov, Minsk Region, a criminal case has been initiated for vandalism on the functioning Jewish cemetery.
The act of vandalism occurred on the evening of June 2 on the Jewish cemetery in the old part of Borisov, founded in 1843.
As a result, 13 graves were desecrated - 3 tombstones broken and 10 brought down. The criminal case was initiated under Part 1 of Article 347 of the Belarusian Criminal Code (desecration of a corpse or a grave).
The article provides for penalties as a fine or arrest for up to six months, or restriction of liberty for a term up to three years, or imprisonment for the same period.
According to the Chairman of the Jewish community of Borisov, Michael Perets, over the past 6 years, there have been three acts of vandalism on the two city cemeteries, the Jewish News agency reports.
The latest act of vandalism occurred in July 2007, when the unidentified destroyed four monuments on the Jewish cemetery, founded in 1930.
The vandals have been identified and have paid a fair penalty. But this fact did not stop the violators.
Acts of vandalism take place in the city almost annually.
For example, at the end of May 2008, the building of the Jewish community center and the former premises of the synagogue, were desecrated with anti-Semitic graffiti and drawings.
