The Educational center of the Jewish Agency will be opened in the building of Galitskaya synagogue.

                  25.12.2002

Only half a year ago the factory dining room was located in the building of Galitskaya synagogue in the center of Kiev. But soon here will sound young voices of those who will come to study the Torah, the history of Israel and the Jewish heritage. The new Educational center of the Jewish Agency will be opened here.
The historical building was returned to the Jewish community in September 2001 as a result of long and uneasy negotiations conducted by the Chief Rabbi of Ukraine, Yaakov Dov Bleich, with local authorities.
The synagogue constructed in 1909, was been closed by the Soviet authorities in 1921. In 1930 the building was transferred to the "Signal" factory.
As there are already two synagogues in the city, which are not filled by believers even on Saturday, rabbi Bleikh has made the decision to transfer the building to the Jewish Agency on the long-term rent basis.
The Zionist "kolel" (where young people will study Jewish spiritual heritage) will be located in the building as well as the youth club and a branch of "Bney Akiva". Besides here will pass all-Ukrainian seminars for teachers of Jewish schools on various subjects and for all age groups. Here there will also be a methodical center of teaching Zionism and Judaism and the library of Jewish literature.
Nowadays the Jewish Agency is searching for a sponsor who will render help in restoring the building that remained deserted and ownerless for years.
